Shriya Iyer

Shriya, a senior at Centennial High School in Frisco, TX, has been involved with the Swami Vivekananda Integrated Rural Health Center (SVIRH) since 2019. Her first visit to the Center five years ago deeply moved her, particularly the plight of the leprosy patients. Determined to help, she and her family collected clothes, books, and toys for donation. Shriya also played a key role in creating public service announcements to dispel the myths about leprosy and enlighten and educate the local public about this disease.

Shriya founded this nonprofit organization to take her commitment one step further. She is raising funds for reconstructive surgery, which includes a 2-month hospitalization, the first step in fighting the stigma against lepers. Patients with deformed limbs and extremities are treated with suspicion and loathing. After surgery, most patients can go about their normal activities without discrimination.

Additionally, the funds will be used to provide training and resources for patients to start their own businesses and thereby achieve financial independence. Being able to earn money on their own is crucial in restoring dignity and fighting the stigma against leprosy.
